Above is a collection of photos that I've taken over the last 12 months during the night. Until about mid 2020 I was very much a night owl, which meant that I would venture out into town with the car and the camera well after sunset. Night photography is definitely similar to light painting (even though light painting can only be achieved at night or in a dark space) but it's a little bit easier to achieve depending on where you are and what atmosphere you're in.
Some locations may require the camera to be set up on a tripod and use a remote shutter, while other locations such as carparks or under bright light sources (such as a tree wrapped in fairy lights) allow you to still use the camera in-hand. It's all trial and error, and after shooting in plenty of places with varying light sources, you definitely learn to gauge how you're going to utilise the camera to capture your photo.
For most locations, taking photos during the night is also a sure-fire way to make sure that no people or cars come along and potentially ruin that perfect photo. A lot of these places are open (or lights turned on) quite late into the night when most people are at home and in bed, meaning that you're able to capture some pretty awesome photos without constantly being interruped.
